So What exactly is Abstinence? Abstinence is when you choose not to engage in sexual intercourse until marriage.
Sex is a beautiful thing that God created to enjoy between a man and his wife. However, having sex out of marriage is sin in God’s eyes. You may say if God created sex why is it sin? And are people restricted from having it? Good question!
Everything that God created He as a reason and a purpose behind it. God created sex to enjoy for some reasons. He created sex between a male and female in marrage for close connections with each other, for pleasure, and also to repopulate the earth and start a family.
Now God is not the author of confusion neither does He create disorder. He doesn’t want any family to have broken homes, broken hearts, or be dysfunctional; that’s why marriage is very important in God’s eyes.
Why? With marriage comes commitment. When a man and a woman come together in holy matrimony they actually made a vow not only to themself; but they also made a vow in the sight of God and other witnesses that they commited to be with each other until death separated one of them.
That is why it’s called Holy Matrimony, because God is a Holy God. Now that’s a big commitment right there; Not only do they record their commitment to each other and sign the marriage certificate.
But God Himself also records that marriage of commitment that they made to each other. So marriage is something not to take lightly either. Hebrews 13:4
However, God knew that there were going to be lots of broken homes and family; and people are going to have sex out of marriage. Therefore, He instituted marriage from the very beginning of creation. Genesis 1:28
Unfortunately sex as being misused and got perverted by satan, he twisted everything that God designed good and perverted it, sex happened to be one of them.
Staying sexually pure In today’s society is very challenging, because sex is seen as the norm and everyone is doing it. However just because everyone is doing it doesn’t make it right. If it’s not done the proper way that God ordained it, it is called sin. One, sex has been flaunted in many different ways such as, in the media, music, books, internet / pornography, advertisement etc… sex is everywhere. The question is how can you escape it?

1. Keep your thoughts pure: Stay away from fantasizing or day dreaming of someone. Remember whatever you feed your mind on it will come out in your actions. For example, if a person watches a lot of pornography everyday on the internet, then that’s when the person is more subtle to fall into sexual sin.
Feed your mind with good things, like reading books on finance to gain more knowledge on how to become a better steward of your money. Nevertheless, you can watch ted talks videos to gain wisdom and knowledge. Just simply pick up the Bible and read; reading the Bible will help you draw closer to Christ. The more you read God’s word the less likely you are to fall into sin. Philippians 4:8
2. Stay away from sexual entertainments: Stay away from sexual movie scenes, secular music, or music that has a lot of sexuality in them. Stay away from romance novels or books, take precautions when surfing websites.
3. Stay far away from pornography or porongraphic images: These are all bad junk for your soul. Whatever a man sows, he will also reap. Galatians 6:7-8 therefore, if you sow corruption and keep feeding your mind with junk; that’s what you will reap in the end. You are the CEO of your life. No one tells you what to do or where to go but you. You are in control of your own vehicle, how you drive that vehicle is totally up to you. You can either drive that vehicle and arrive at a safe destination or allow the vehicle to spin out of control. The decision is all up to you, no one can tell you how to drive your own vehicle but you.
4. Have a marriage mindset: When you are looking to date someone you should always have a marriage mindset, this goes for men as well, going on a date without a purpose and not knowing why you want to date is like going to the grocery store with no money. You need to know the reason why you want to date, it’s very important.
5. Date Godly people who are like minded and have the same Godly standards and goals just like you: If most of their dating goals don’t match up to yours then keep it moving.
6. Surround yourself with Godly people: there is a saying; actually it’s more like an idiom – birds of a feather flock together. 1 Corinthians 15:33 states that “bad company corrupts good character.”
Surround yourself with friends you know that are really going to help you overcome sin and temptations. You want to stick with friends who are willing to tell you the truth no matter how much the truth hurts.
Those are good friends that are looking out for your well being and care alot for you. Friends who don’t respect your beliefs and your values, you need to stay far away from.
7. Read the Bible everyday to draw strength and mature in Christ: If this is any help for you, when reading the bible you should read scriptures that will assist you in whatever you’re struggling with. For example, if you’re struggling with pornography read scriptures that talk about sexual purity. 1 Corinthians 7:9 By reading these scriptures they will help you overcome sexual sin in your life.
8. Pray for strength in areas you are struggling with: Just as how you would read up on scriptures in the areas you are struggling with. The same goes for prayer. When you pray you should ask God to give you the strength and the will power to overcome sexual sin or any other sin that you know you’re struggling with. As long as your prayer is sincere from the heart to God, and you are willing to make the change, the Lord will help you.
